Almost everyone starts on a centralized exchange, and almost everyone eventually hears that decentralized exchanges are "safer" or "more real" crypto. Neither half of that is quite right on its own. Here's what you're actually trading away, and gaining, when you move from one to the other.
The one-line difference
A centralized exchange (CEX) — Coinbase, Binance, Kraken — is a company. You create an account, deposit funds, and the company holds and manages them on your behalf while you trade. A decentralized exchange (DEX) — Uniswap, Curve, dYdX — is a set of smart contracts. There's no company holding your funds; you connect your own wallet and trade directly against a pool of liquidity or other users, with the blockchain itself enforcing the rules.
Who actually holds your money
This is the real dividing line, and everything else follows from it. On a CEX, the exchange holds custody of your funds the moment you deposit — you have a claim on an IOU, not direct ownership of the coins sitting in your account balance. That's exactly the arrangement that turned catastrophic when FTX collapsed in 2022: user balances existed on a screen, but the actual assets behind them had been misused, and customers lost access to money they thought was simply sitting there.
On a DEX, you never hand over custody. Your funds stay in your own wallet until the instant a trade executes, governed by a smart contract's code rather than a company's internal ledger and good faith. "Not your keys, not your coins" is the shorthand crypto users repeat for exactly this distinction, and it's the single biggest practical difference between the two models.

The tradeoffs people don't think about until they hit them
A CEX's identity verification requirement is genuinely annoying, but it's also what enables customer support, fraud disputes, and in some cases deposit protections that simply don't exist on a DEX. If you send funds to the wrong address on a DEX, or approve a malicious contract, there's no support ticket that fixes it — the transaction is final the moment it's confirmed on-chain.
A DEX's total lack of a listing process cuts both ways. It means genuinely new, interesting projects can get liquidity on day one without needing a centralized exchange's approval. It also means anyone can create a fraudulent token and a liquidity pool for it in minutes, which is exactly why DEXs are the primary venue for the rug-pull pattern I've written about elsewhere on this site — a scam token needs no permission to list, just liquidity and a convincing name.
Gas fees change the DEX math in ways people underestimate
A CEX trade typically costs a flat, predictable percentage fee regardless of network conditions. A DEX trade also requires paying the underlying blockchain's own transaction fee on top of the DEX's swap fee — which, as I've written about in more depth elsewhere, can swing from a few cents to a genuinely meaningful cost depending on network congestion. For small trades during a busy period, gas fees alone can eat a disproportionate chunk of the trade's value on a DEX in a way that simply doesn't happen on a CEX.
So which should you actually use?
Most people who take this seriously end up using both, for different jobs, the same way I'd suggest splitting between a hot wallet and a cold wallet elsewhere on this site. A CEX is usually the practical on-ramp — buying crypto with a bank transfer or card, and a reasonable place to hold smaller, actively-traded amounts. A DEX becomes more relevant once you're interacting directly with DeFi protocols, trading newer tokens a CEX hasn't listed, or specifically trying to avoid handing custody of larger holdings to a third party.
The short version
A centralized exchange trades convenience and support for custody of your funds. A decentralized exchange trades that custody risk for direct responsibility — no company standing between you and your money, and no company to fix things if you make a mistake or get targeted by a scam. Neither is strictly the "right" answer; they're built for different tradeoffs, and most serious crypto users end up using both rather than picking a side permanently.
